Kento Koike

About Me

I am an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical, Electronics and Information Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Kanagawa University, where I lead the Problem-Solving Intelligence Lab. I am also a Collaborative Researcher at the Chiba Institute of Technology Research Institute.

Before this, I was a Program-specific Researcher at Kyoto University’s Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies (ACCMS) in Prof. Hiroaki Ogata’s lab, and an Assistant Professor in Prof. Takako Akakura’s lab at the Faculty of Engineering, Tokyo University of Science.

My research focuses on operationalizing theories of human learning as working systems to support transferable problem-solving. With a team of students and collaborators, I work to uncover and realize the mechanisms behind “compound interest in problem-solving"—where insights gained from solving one problem prove effective on the next. With Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) as my primary field, I take an interdisciplinary approach that integrates findings from cognitive science, knowledge engineering, and learning analytics.

Personal

From Akaiwa City, Okayama Prefecture. Mainly raised in Tama City, Tokyo. Fourth of five siblings. Father of two.

I’ve moved around quite a bit: Okayama → Tokyo → Kanagawa → Chiba → Kyoto → Tokyo → Kanagawa.

During my student days, I ran servers and websites, earned pocket money through logo and business card design, placed 2nd in an amateur FPS game tournament, and ended up coaching a professional team. As a working professional, I served as a manager at an EdTech company and worked independently as a consultant. Eventually I became a researcher, and have been actively involved in various academic societies and young researcher organizations.

I pride myself on a diverse background, so for anyone who wants to take on various challenges and take action to make it happen, I can offer multifaceted discussions beyond just research.

My hobbies are wide and shallow. I watch a lot of light novels, manga, anime, and movies, and listen to everything from EDM and Celtic to Jazz, J-POP, and Hip-Hop. I also enjoy watching esports.

Outdoors, I’m into camping, BBQ, photography, and driving. Indoors, I like keeping my hands busy with gaming, leathercraft, DTP & design, and building and running home servers.

I’ve fallen deep into the rabbit holes of gadgets (keyboards, mice, audio equipment), coffee, craft beer, whiskey, and fountain pens. If we share any interests, let’s talk!
